May 22 & 23, 2010:  Cupping I:  Introduction to the Basics of Massage Cupping

Saturday & Sunday:  10:00AM-6:00PM

CE Hours:  14

Cost:  $250.00

Cupping is an age old method of bodywork and is becoming more and more popular in the US due to its effectiveness and because…it feels great. By creating a vacuum inside of a cup to attach it to the body, it can be used in place (stationary) or moved along the skin (moving/gliding). This simple technique has been used for centuries - cupping is described in Egyptian medical texts from as early as 1500 BCE.

The gentle lifting of the soft tissue can release adhesions, decrease stagnation in body fluids and Qi, and stimulate the skin. Cupping also engages the parasympathetic nervous system, quickly facilitating deep relaxation. As a treatment method, cupping is very safe, inexpensive, easy on the practitioner, and easy to learn.

Workshop material will include:
    • Safety for the client and practitioner
    • Effects of cupping treatments
    • Ah shi, or pain point techniques
    • Flash cupping
    • Moving/gliding cupping
    • Contraindications
    • Self-cupping
    • Incorporating cupping into your practice

During the course of the workshop you’ll become comfortable with attaching, detaching, and manipulating the cups to achieve varying levels of vacuum. Once you have learned the basics, you’ll find that you can use cups in almost any way you would use your hands - for deep tissue, trigger point, myofascial release, Swedish, Thai…the only methodology we’ve found that doesn’t lend itself to cupping is Watsu. But we’re working on that.

Instructors:  Jim Madras, LMT (lic #7853) has been studying Qigong and Yang Style Tai Chi with internal arts expert Sam Masich since 1995, and is the director of the Natural Arts Center in Eugene. He also has a private massage practice focusing on Chinese Massage Cupping and chronic pain.

Erica Anderson - has worked in the field of massage therapy, doing everything but massage for the past 15 years.  She is also a teacher of Tai Chi at the Natural Arts Center, the Eugene YMCA, and an instructor at the 2008 Pacific Association of Women Martial Artists (PAWMA) camp - and is the Organization Queen of Six Rivers, the continuing education catalog for Oregon Massage Therapists.
